From her opening monotone greeting to the memorable – now retro – samples, PinkPantheress takes the listener on a ride of Y2K-inspired garage tracks. I fear that the success of the opening single — especially on TikTok — might disappoint some, as if you were hoping for more of the sound that ‘Illegal’ brings, you’re not going to get it. The mixtape is diverse, with a range of UK-centric influences making it into the final 20-minute release, and I’m hoping to see this range of influences go into her future work, and potentially a second studio album.
